Replace Your Kitchen Sink Sprayer in 10 Easy Steps

If your kitchen sink has a freestanding sprayer – one that’s on the side next to the main faucet – and it breaks, you may think that need to replace the entire faucet. However, you can save money by buying and installing a replacement sprayer instead. Depending on whether you want a plastic, chrome, or stainless steel model, a new sprayer can cost you less than $10 or over $30.

Plumbing Checklist

This guide will show you how to replace an existing sink sprayer. If you want to add a new sprayer, you’ll either have need an available mounting hole on your sink, or you can install a faucet with an integrated hose that extends for spraying.

What you’ll need:

  • New side sprayer – available at most home improvement and plumbing supply stores
  • Two pairs of channel-type pliers
  • Basin or adjustable wrench
  • Plumber’s putty

Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the water by closing the shut-off valves to the faucet under the sink or the main shut-off valve for the entire house.
  2. From under the sink, disconnect the sprayer hose from the faucet body. To this, take one pair of pliers and hold brass connection from the faucet body, then unscrew the hose connector nut with the other pair of pliers.
  3. Above the sink, pull the sprayer hose up and out of the mounting hole.
  4. If your old sprayer includes a housing, loosen the mounting nut underneath the sink using your wrench. Then remove the housing.
  5. Take your new sprayer and insert the tailpiece through the mounting hole. If the housing does not have a gasket around the base, place a small amount of plumber’s putty under the base to create a seal when the housing is mounted on the sink.
  6. Under the sink, use your wrench or pliers to tighten the mounting nut on to the sprayer housing tailpiece. You may have to hold the housing in place if it twists when you tighten the nut.
  7. Above the sink, insert the new sprayer hose through the housing and position it the way you want.
  8. Under the sink, attach the sprayer’s threaded fitting to the faucet body’s diverter nipple. Use one pair of pliers to hold the fitting and the other to tighten the housing mounting nut. This will secure the hose to the faucet.
  9. Check to make sure all connections are tight. Then turn the water back on and test the sprayer, looking for any leaks.
  10. We recommend you run some hot water through the new sprayer to soften the tubing. This will make it easier to extend and move around the sprayer when it comes time to use it.

If you’re unsure about purchasing the right replacement sprayer for your kitchen, you can remove and take the old one in to show the home improvement or plumbing store staff. They should be able to make sure you have the proper product.
