Prevent Frozen Pipes

If you’ve never had the misfortune to have a frozen pipe burst in your home or workplace then count yourself lucky; the devastation it leaves behind seems to never end, even months after, you could still be noticing smells that are the result of water damage.

Of course, it isn’t just aromas that have an effect – losing precious family treasures and memories to the water makes a burst pipe something that you REALLY want to avoid.

Pratt Plumbing has put together a basic list of things to consider to help prevent frozen pipes and the subsequent damage.

Insulation

Any pipework that is subjected to extremes in temperatures should be well insulated, this includes any pipework in your roof space as well – just because it is technically inside the home, it doesn’t mean that it’s safe.
Ensure that your roof space is also well insulated.

Empty Pipes can’t Freeze

Where possible, removing any water from the pipe is a guarantee of safety. Obviously this isn’t possible in many cases, but where it is, you should always do it.

Frost Settings

If you’re thinking of going away for a period of time, you should always leave some heat circulating in your home, many systems have a frost setting built-in which allows for just enough heat to cycle through the system, keeping it a frost free zone.

Beware!

Something that many people don’t realize – in the harshest of climates, your pipes will freeze and get damaged, most people assume that everything is ok because they don’t see any water in what should be water free zones, but be aware; the water will only show up once the weather warms up again and everything has thawed out!
